The Bible Project | – Abraham and Melchizedek

Melchizedek is one of the most intriguing characters in the Bible, first introduced in the story of Abraham. He’s a mysterious priest king who rules a city that will later be called Jerusalem, and he gives God’s blessing to Abraham. In this video, we’ll explore how Melchizedek fits into the larger biblical theme of the coming royal priest.

  1. Melchizedek is a curious figure in the Bible, first introduced in the story of Abraham (Genesis ch. 14). He’s a priest king who rules in Salem, the pre-Israelite city that will later be named Jerusalem. In contrast to the kings around him, he recognizes Abraham as God’s chosen one, and he gives him the gift of a feast and God’s blessing. Abraham is so enamored with this royal priest that he gives him one-tenth of all his possessions (Gen 14:18-20). What’s this all about?

    One helpful perspective is to remember that the story of Abraham is being told from the perspective of an Israelite author living centuries later, someone who knows the story of King David’s rise to a royal priesthood, and of Solomon’s sponsorship of a royal temple in Jerusalem. When David brought the tabernacle of God’s presence into the city, he dressed like the high priest (see the stories in 2 Samuel 6), and God promised to give him a royal lineage of kings that would produce a descendant who would build a temple to Yahweh that would last forever (see 2 Samuel 7). In the Psalms scroll, David reflects on God’s promise (see Psalm 2, 72) and says that this descendant will reign forever because of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). The story in Genesis 14 has been designed to anticipate the much later stories about David and God’s promise of a royal priest who would come from David’s lineage. This theme was important to Jesus, who claimed to be that anticipated royal priest (see Jesus’ discussion of Psalm 110 in Matthew 22:41-46), and this allowed Jesus’ followers to see how Melchizedek pointed forward to a future priest king (as in Hebrews chs. 7-8).

  2. Protestants are fascinated with the "priest" well that is; until it comes to the Royal Priesthood Jesus ordained for us today;
    then they turn right around & insist there are now no altars & no priests.
    just a book someone put together; we're not sure who,
    but after the invention of the printing press; any one can edit it and claim they know it all….
    you of course will notice also that all " protestant lay preachers try to draw a subtle line between themselves & King David (which dose not exist)
    rendering unto them selves authority which also dose not exist.

    "in many things they were with me;
    but in a few things they were not with me;
    now because of the few things, the many things will not profit them."

  3. Melchizedek is none other than Lord Jesus Christ himself!

    – John 8:56: he says I met Abraham
    – Genesis 14:18 : Abraham met Melchizedek, King of Salem (or Jerusalem), Melchizedek was the priest of God Most High
    – Psalms 110:4 : Jesus is called the priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek
    – Hebrews 7:2: Melchizedek means "King of Righteousness" and "King of Salem" means "King of Peace"
    Jesus is the prince of peace as the scripture says

    Therefore the Melchizedek is none other than our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ himself! Hallelujah

  4. Technically the entire Earth is Eden. The Bible says that God planted a garden "in" Eden and that the Cherubim don't guard the way to the garden but to the tree of life. The tree of life of which we must eat to live forever is Jesus Christ. Jesus said "I am the way" and "whoever eats of my bread will live forever". We take communion to represent this.

  5. All scripture points to Christ and to Christ alone. Hence it's by hearing the Word of Christ and the Word of Christ alone, that we are brought to the faith.
    In the Old Testament, He has been prophesied/predicted, in the gospel He has been revealed, in the Acts He has been preached, in the Epistles He has been explained and finally in the book of Revelation His return is awaited. Amen!

  6. Sounds like man-made religion to me … you make a video about something that you know "almost nothing" about and you give your personal explanation of what that "almost nothing" means ~ sounds like man-made religion to me.

  7. Melchizedek is Shem. Noah and Melchizedek taught Abraham the mysteries and The Order of the Son (Melchizedek priesthood which teaches the fullness of the everlasting gospel) for 39 years. Halleluyah!! All praise honor and glory to The Most High God our Creator!

  8. Melchizedek is Shem for those of you that don’t know. It’s written in the book of Yasher. It goes into details about all of this. He taught the ways of the Most High and was a priest. His name in the Hebrew is Adoni-Tsedeq. The same is Shem.

  9. You left out a HUGE part of this story, which most of our western Church does. That is WHY Sarah was so jealous. The Egyptian maiden, Hagar, had a son via Abraham, Ishmael, and Sarah made Abraham send her and his son away. Abraham takes the maiden and his son out to the desert, gives them a single flask of water, and prays a blessing over the Hagar and Ishmael. He would become the father of many great nations and millions of people. These were the Arab nations that we know today. In this blessing, Abraham did not say that they would be evil or bad or ungodly, as our western Churches perceive them. That's all. I am not criticizing you or anything of that sort. Just making a point. I am a Christian and not of Arab descent, so anyone can take it or leave it. I choose not to judge. That's all. I choose LOVE. Thanks for the great videos you make. Very inspiring and informational.

  12. Why you didn't mention that Melchizedek gives Abraham Bread and Wine that represent The Eucharist (Body and Blood of Jesus Christ). Oh, I forgot you are Church Heresy and your teaching is poison to Christianity.
