John Piper | – Don’t Waste Your Mornings // Ask Pastor John

Reaching over to check your phone will start your day on the wrong foot. What we need in our morning routine is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Pastor John, in yesterday’s episode (episode #636), you gave us six reasons why we addictively grab our phones when we wake up in the morning. And you said you had a remedy — a better course forward. Please share that with us here.

  1. Is phone addiction okay if I'm on it for religious purposes? 80% of what I do on my phone is watch Christian YouTube videos or read articles to help me and keep me in check. I do typically say a good morning prayer when I get up if I don't wake up having an anxiety attack about Hell or something that happened the day before.

  2. How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

  3. I've never been a morning person… It takes me a while to wake up/get my mental clarity on. I like to play worship music – on my phone, while I have my morning coffee, before getting on with my day ❤️

  4. Not to sound crazy but I'm speaking from knowledge because I'm an Electronic Engineering Tech. All video monitors including your phone flash over 1,000,000 times per second. Your eye cant see it but your brain can. Your screen looks solid but its not. It causes all humans to go into "Flicker-Induced Hypnosis" after about 5 seconds. In that state you can be made to feel great joy, hunger, anger, or sadness by what you see because your suggestive a.k.a. hypnotized. That's scientifically why you obsess over your phone you love the joy being hypnotized brings you. That's the truth I'm telling you its scientific and I believe Jesus would tell you the same. The down side is being in suggestion makes it easier for you to sin because being hypnotized while watching sinful actors changes your good behavior. bad company corrupts good morals. God Bless.

  6. I have wasted far too many years reading the Bible and praying to nothing. My morning devotional is to now educate myself on the world from a perspective without god–the joy I feel now surpasses anything I ever heard Piper talk about.

  7. Me and my wife.. Putting on the armour of God, not long after opening our eyes, another day another mercy…. amongst other things, asking in prayer that he may use us as vessels through his great love to glorify his name, by reaching lost souls through his testimony of saving power…that he opens doors of evangelistic opportunities and by his spirit scattering seeds through us his servants.

  8. Here we are 3 years later and God led me straight to a word I needed for TODAY! I've been struggling most of my adult life to force myself up, out of bed and before God in a consistent not hurried way. I've been unable to do it because I can't wake up easily. I've been working from home for a couple of months because of the pandemic and it's gotten worse. I'm so convicted of this sin and am starting to fight back by any means necessary. Grateful God led me to this message. I feel encouraged!!!

  9. Oh my goodness
    Stop!
    Don't think like you do your putting negative thoughts in my mind
    Hating me wow!

    I have my morning set God is always with me
    Your a total stranger I'm listening to
    I'm ok and your ok
    I'm glad in the Lord daily in everyway
    He is always with me God
    Will never leave me nor forsake me
    All in all
    Thank you for sharing

  10. I used to think I wasn’t a morning person….until I became a morning person. I realized that I had created an idol of comfort – I’d rather stay in my comfortable, warm bed than get up and seize the day. My flesh desired/desires comfort; however, this “comfort zone”, I realized, was killing me (not necessary literally, but spiritually). This idol of comfort had held me back for so long and had seriously deterred my personal growth, and I didn’t even realize it until just recently (it is humbling to realize that it took me 20+ years to see these things that, in hindsight, were staring me in the eyes the whole time – but I didn’t like the implications, so I ignored them and looked for other answers).
    Realizing this – and deciding to do something about it – has opened up my eyes to many other forms of idolatry that I had created or allowed in to my life. It was actually quite freeing: recognizing the problem, which meant that I could then tackle the problem. Unsurprisingly, I have so far found Jesus to be the only remedy – not to say that He has removed these struggles, but He has given me peace; and that, though Him and His strength, I have been given victory, even if not fully attained yet.
    John 16:33; Romans 8:6-8; John 14:27; Philippians 4:13; Romans 8:37; Philippians 3:12
    (Ps. I include these Scriptures not to show off or anything like that, but in recognition that this struggle has brought each of those scriptures to life and I can now actually identify with them, instead of being just words on a page).

  11. I start my morning with "Thank you Jesus"  Pray, then  I read my daily devotional on my phone, Then I rise up and Talk to God. Letting him know I am grateful for no alarming phone calls in the night. I have my health and strength. I Decree the Favor of God surrounds my loved ones and I like a shield. Then I focus on the new day I have been given.

  12. Android solution:
    MacroDroid app, with up to 5 free macros.
    Trigger = (whatever time in the morning)
    Action = open Bible app
    Action = click "read" (yes, you can show the macro where to click!)
    Action = click play button

    This will just pick up reading wherever you left off. You could probably have it navigate to a specific book/chapter/verse each day, but that seems like too much work!

  13. I have been laziness for many years, then God discipline me at least 3 times I thought because I am foolish not understand the dream so that He has to show my sin as laziness to me many times .I alway sleep till noon but right now I always wake up at almost same time everyday because my stomach with air-blowing make me won’t stay in bed any longer just want to get up immediately.All I want to say is God is helping me☺️.

  14. To whoever is reading this: Please consider taking a short moment and praying for my family. My grandmother is currently over 90 years old. My parents are non-believers as well and my three siblings too. Every prayer makes a difference. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and may god bless you!
