R.C. Sproul | – Since Jesus took our punishment, why didn't He need to go to hell forever?
The smallest sin deserves eternal judgment from a holy God. Why didn’t Jesus need to spend eternity in hell in order to satisfy the Father’s justice on our behalf? From one of our Ask R.C. events, R.C. Sproul expresses the infinite value of Christ’s atoning work.

Psalm 139:8 even if I make my bed in sheol, you are there
I think Jesus can descend into hell but not to suffer punishment because God is omnipresent and sovereign over all. Whether he did or did not, or if the word "descended into hell" is a metaphorical expression, that's another question
Jesus went to literal hell to set the captives free. He preached to spirits in bondage. He took paradise with him to heaven. This is our Lord!
According to 2 Peter 3, the punishment of hell is held in reserve to the coming of the Lord. So how could he have gone there when he died? The answer is easy when you realize that the word hell in this case translates as hades or the grave. This corresponds with the Hebrew word for Sheol also grave. This was a place where the person slept when they died until the day of judgment. The place of torment in the NT was called Gehenna.
Self-destruction’s the name of the game
Humanity’s played in God’s name.
Nails thorns and a cross :
It’s all done by the boss
But salvation is not quite the same
Well said. Thank you Jesus. Praise God
Another way of putting it. If we put an innocent child up to sacrifice for our sins, who would argue that this child should suffer ever a second longer? It is innocent and doesn't deserve to bear our punishments, especially when it did nothing wrong.
Jesus never sinned. The Father chose to sacrifice him… this is most significant because it is injustice, but it was done out of grace… but God is the standard of grace, so sacrifice is said to be one of the greatest things we can do for another person… it may not be deserved, but it is out of love… that's just how the universe is.
I haven’t heard an answer like this that is not scripture based at all – ever.
His punishment was not eternal because God punishment is not ever lasting. You will PERISH
JOHN 3:16
Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. That’s why a unblemished lamb was required for a temporary satisfaction to God for Israel.
Jesus was that perfect lamb unblemished by sin. So His shedding of blood would atone for all sin for all time..
That’s my take on it as well
"Sing for joy, you Heavens, for THE LORD has done this;
shout aloud, you Earth beneath.
Burst into song, you mountains,
you forests and all your trees,
for THE LORD has redeemed Jacob,
he displays his glory in Israel."
ISAIAH 44:23
Jesus didn’t take our sin. He paid the price for it.
Jesus paid for your sin, He did not commit your sin,
The eternal hell punishment is a Roman Catholic doctrine, it was never the believe of the prophets, Jesus or the apostles?
You can’t find it in the Old Testament. This idea was borrowed from the pagan Egyptians to the pagan Greeks, to the Pharisees and arriving to the Roman church after the third century. Hell is not a place, otherwise the devil and the demons should be burning already for what they have done.
Hell will be an EVENT after the Millenium. Revelation 20:5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished.
Revelation 20:14-15 And Hades and death were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens, which are now, and the earth are conserved by the same word, kept unto the fire in the day of judgment and of perdition of the ungodly men.
2 Peter 2:6 and if [he] condemned by destruction the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha, turning them into ashes, making [them] an example unto those that after should live without fear and reverence of God; (SODOMA and GOMORRAH ARE AN EXAMPLE, THIS CITIES ARE NOT BURNING TODAY.)
Matthew 25:41 Then he shall also say unto those who [shall be] on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels;
Matthew 25:46 And they shall go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.: (ETERNAL PUNISHMENT = ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES.)
You can’t punish anybody without a judgment first.
Jesus went to hell to slap Satan around….. duh
Because he is literally God himself bruh
Also, Hell is the lake of sulfur which gets prepared after the end of the millennial kingdom.
Do y'all even know scripture?
There is no hell right now.
There is only "paradise" or Sheol.
The only people that will be in the hell will be the Anti Christ and False Prophet during the millennial kingdom.
Read ya bibles.
Not those little pamphlets in church.
Only the annihilation view of hell can make harmonious sense with Jesus’ death on the Cross. All of you who hold to the traditional view of eternal torment have nothing of substance to grasp onto to justify it.
God is without time. One day is a thousand years and a thousand years is one day. So if the Lord is without time, then he went to hell infinitely, and also for a fraction of a second. He knew us before we were born, so soon as he come back from hell with the keys, all our sins are forgiven and our sins are sent to hell in our place. We cannot understand how this is possible. We just dont have the compute power of out tiny brains ,so we find it very hard to understand.
I love listening to Sproul; he was one of my favorites, even if I didn't agree with everything he said.
But I also love how he physically squirms in his seat when he's asked about the Apostle's Creed… and then clears his throat… I think his answer was pretty good, but it does expose (or should expose) the history of Christian theology quite a bit… i.e. stuff was added later on… that pesky old "asterisk" in texts. Should make one ask "what else was added that I now take to be 'from the mouth of Jesus' but really wasn't?"
Long answer.. Here’s a shorter version. Jesus was righteous and innocent and died unjustly. God had to raise him because it’s the law. Wages of sin is death, wages of no sin is life. And because of this sacrifice Gods mercy resides through Jesus. Those who believe will be saved those who don’t will be damned. If you ain’t perfect I recommend you take the free gift because your plea of not guilty will be in vain. As all men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God., except for one. Jesus

Listen Man or Dr.?
You said nothing new! about Yashua aka Jesus and you call your self a Doctor? Of whoom Deaf&Blind??!
RC Sproul demonstrating the intellectual and spiritual cost of defending such a blasphemous, warped and unscriptural doctrine. Just because he can't think of another way to defend it doesn't mean his argument is any good. How can it be that finite sins committed by finite beings deserve infinite punishment? Every effect has a cause and the effect cannot be greater than the cause! If you fire a bullet into a mountain the size of the mountain isn't transferred to the bullet. Why would God's infinity be transferred to the finite sin or to the finite sinner? Complete nonsense! Depraved and blasphemous imaginations.
Great question!
These guys that call them self preacher don’t even know what the Bible says
It wasn't His debt it was ours payed in full why would He who is sinless stay in hell?
The Apostles Creed is crap I need to get you to say something I think I told us about reputation in prayer and acting like it's new day a thing it's the old evil way layered with something new to confuse you
See that's where you screw up only people who send without salvation go to hell and Jesus was without sin so what's he going to hell for there's nothing there for him there he had all the keys all the power all the glory that he shared with the father live life you can believe what you want to believe but the Bible says different this day you told the thief you will be with me in paradise and say 3 days from now bro
Try to sin a little everyday
Or Jesus died for nothing .
The reason Jesus didn't burn in Hell forever because that is NOT the punishment. The wages of sin is DEATH, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23). There is a contrast there. Death vs. eternal life. The lost do NOT have eternal life. Truth is only the Lord has immortality. 1 Timothy 6:15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
No human is born with an immortal soul. Truth is we are GIVEN immortality through the Gospel. The lost do NOT have immortality. 2 Timothy 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
Jesus did pay the full price for our punishment. Our punishment is DEATH. Jesus DIED. Jesus paid the debt in FULL. Jesus shed His Blood to wash away our sins. Jesus rose again for our justification.
The reason many cannot answer that question is because they preach the lie that everyone has an immortal soul and so when you pass on, your spirit will either have eternal life in Heaven or in Hell. That is a lie. It is against Scripture. The only One who has immortality is the Lord and the only ones who have the gift of immortality or eternal life are those who have put their faith alone in Jesus.
You are not in rebellion so you can say our rebellion is worse than infinite punishment.
Is God more interested in punishing us or correcting us? If he is more interested in punishing then he's an abusive god but not a loving God.
MENTAL ILLNESS ALL UP IN HERE
Because he did not want to stay there for that long. 🙂 After he got his key to hades, he is like, I'm out of this place.
When someone pays your fine do they go to prison? That’s basically what it’s asking. Jesus paid our fine for the crimes we have committed. That’s what happened on the cross.
The Bible says Jesus tasted death for everyone. Jesus suffered on the cross and then died. If death really means eternal life in hell, then why didn't Jesus burn in hell, even if it was only for a few days?
The penalty for sin is not hell, it’s death. Hell is the resulting place your eternal spirit goes if you are not holy/sinless. Upon death if you did not have your sin paid for than you must go to hell and be separated from God due to your unholy nature. Christ accepted the sins of the world, suffered and died on the cross to pay for the penalty of those sins. He was the perfect lamb sacrifice and due to his deity is able to accept the sins of all the world through all time. However his eternal spirit had no sins of his own to pay for, so once that penalty was paid for through death on the cross, his holy deity remained and thus he did not have to reside in hell for any time. He did descend to Abraham’s bosom (sheol good side) to preach to the saved individuals who did not know the coming Messiahs name. He led them to heaven and now when we die we ascend to heaven and wait until the resurrection. Think of the sacrificial lambs the Jews sacrificed in the Old Testament. Did the lamb go to hell upon it’s death? No, did they only have to sacrifice one lamb for all their sin, No. The lamb was a momentary covering of their sin, due to the finite nature of the lamb it could not accept all the sins of the world nor it’s death could pay the penalty for the persons sin nature. Only God can do something so great.
Such nonsense
We are born into sin. Can’t fix it. But we must suffer. FOREVER? Nowhere is that in the Bible
Love RC but this is just so much garbage
Outstanding
Pretty simple answer, sin conceives death, the sinful dead then inherit hell, since Jesus died without sin, death had no rights over him and so Jesus had no inheritance in hell and it had no dominion over him, therefore God raised him from the dead due to the illegality of his being put to death in the first place. Now we that are truly saved and reside in Christs body covered by grace through faith we too have no inheritance in hell because death has no legality to hold us due to we know are imputed righteousness our sins covered and remembered no more, so just as jesus was raised from the grave by God because death had no rights over him, we too will be raised because death has no right to keep us either who are found in Christ. This is why the bible says we are justified by Christ rising from the grave so in this we know we too have life eternal with christ.
All I have to say is In the O.T we see how everytime they offered a sacrifice, the fragrance and incense of the sacrifice would go up and God would accept it as "Pleasing" or a "Sweet Savour"
Jesus Was the Ultimate Sacrifice for our sins, and as we all know, his Fragrance and incense was "Pleasing to God" and Accepted.
He was sinless, He didn't commit sin
He took upon Him the sins of the world. Theres a BIG difference.
In the O.T, their sins would be washed away for that Year only, and every year they would have to offer another sacrifice, that "pure" animal would take upon itself the sins of the people.
Kinda Sounds like Jesus done it! But heres the difference . He was Human/God in the Flesh, He was Sinless in the flesh, and He Conquered Sin and death in the Flesh!
He Defeated Satan in the Flesh
And He redeemed mankind in the Flesh!
Now for us it's either Receiving Him or Rejecting him that have eternal consequences because we are eternal beings as well.
There is another argument of why Jesus needed to descend into Hell: that he took the sins of mankind with Him, and then left those sins in Hell to be destroyed eternally in Hell. When He returned, the sins of the world were no longer upon Him.
AMEN
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (CLV) And therefore God will be sending them an operation of deception, for them to believe the falsehood, that all may be judged who do not believe the truth, but delight in injustice.
I can think of no greater injustice than to tell people that God, who is love, will allow his creation to suffer forever for the very sins Christ took away at the cross.
pure heresy
You are looking at Talmud man made religion, Lord Jesus Christ went Hell to bring those put their by Satan. Your denial of Lord Jesus Christ will reverse on you, as spoken by Lord Jesus in Matthew bible section (anyone who denies me Earth I will deny him before my Father who in Heaven.
not sure i understood the answer…it is an interesting question though….
Our punishment is not eternal hell, that's blasphemy. Our punishment is death. That's why Christ died for our sins. Christ didn't go to hell to suffer, that is blasphemy. We have been taught a pagan satanic lie that we have eternal souls, we don't. Christ has brought in eternal life and immortality for us. He is the only one who is immortal and now he has given us that gift. All non Christians will be judged, tormented, and die in the lake of fire. That is the punishment of sin. The punishment is death not eternal torment, that's blasphemy and non sense.
Maybe it's not about punishment but about being cut off
Jesus descended into hell to proclaim victory over death. Jesus is God.
Psalm 88
Islam is the truth
If he took everyone's punishment, then why did the disciples also die on the cross or beheaded or prophets cut in half. I dont think he took away the sins of the world. looks like to me the only sins put on him ways the sins of his family. Which we all take upon our selves. Bc we are all connected to our families. So if your looking at him to save you, you are only deceiving yourself. Also he isnt the only one who Carries others sicknesses we all do. Things run in the family. We all carry those things, bc its passed down from generation to generation. If he took the sins of the world away, then why is there still sin in the world.if he carried our sicknesses then why are people still sick. This makes no sense. Jesus even says about carrying each others burden. . Hello it means your family burdens. It means your families sicknesses. God also put me in hell and tormented me day and night for years and years. Dang I also must be a savior to. Not. He died in obedience. Not to save.
Also this God yall are talking about only has mercy on whom he chooses. Some he chooses to hate. He is also bad. He created bad. He destroys families.. the bible says it's a fearful thing to fall in the hands of the living God. Seriously. I wished I never fell 9into his hands, he showed me how much me and my family are worthless to him.
God's punishment cannot be measured by time thus eternal. Jesus simply took the full magnitude of that punishment.
