R.C. Sproul | – The Millennium: The Last Days According to Jesus with R.C. Sproul

The book of Revelation describes a time period in the last days called the Millennium. In fact, it says that the Millennium is a period of one-thousand years. But when did the last days begin? Are we still waiting for the last days or are we in them now? Is the Millennium a future expectation for the church or are we currently in it? In this message, Dr. Sproul explains the different theological perspectives in the church that are known by their teaching about “The Millennium.”

This is the 12th in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on the last days. See other videos in the series: [support us]

  1. With due respect to all, the Millennium reign of Christ will commence after the events of the time of great tribulation are over and the promises to the Jews of old testament times are fulfilled..

The truth of the Word of God will not be evident unless there is right division of the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15) – the Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven (on earth) preached to the Jews of those days to demonstrate a coming fulfilment of the promise in that book of Ezekiel.

John 3:2-10 > The same [Nicodemus] came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God…Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God… Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

Jesus chided Nicodemus because as a teacher to the Jews he ought to have known about Exekiel 36 & 37 which talks about "water" and "spirit."

Born of water & spirit – refers to Ezekiel 36:24-26 > For I will take you [Jews] from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land [Israel]. Then will I sprinkle clean "water" upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a "new spirit" will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 37:11-12 > Then he [Spirit of the Lord] said unto me [Ezekiel] , Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts. Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.

    Shalom..

  2. In the millennium reign of Christ from the throne of King David in Jerusalem, Israel will rule the world and Hebrew will become the language of communication – all other languages will fade away and become extinct – thus fulfilling 1 Corinthians 13:8 >
… whether there be tongues, they shall cease; ..

    Shalom

  3. To this day, I love every part of this series except it's conclusion in which the postmillennialist position is butchered.

    Historic premil
The return of Christ is just before the millennium and just after a time of great apostasy and tribulation. After the millennium, Satan will be loosed and Gog and Magog will rise against the kingdom of God; this will be immediately followed by the final judgment.

    Amil
The Kingdom of God was inaugurated at Christ's resurrection at which point he gained victory over both Satan and the Curse. Christ is now reigning at the right hand of the Father over His church. After this present age has ended, Christ will return and immediately usher the church into their eternal state after judging the wicked.

    Postmil
Christ brought the Kingdom. The millennium is the era during which Christ is now reigning over the earth, not from an literal and earthly throne, but through the gradual increase of the Gospel and its power to change lives. After this gradual Christianization of the world, Christ will return and immediately usher the church into their eternal state after judging the wicked.

Now I know these views can alter slightly based on whether you are a preterist, historicist, idealist or futurist. But you will be hard pressed to find a postmillennialist alive today or for the last century who would describe his position the way it's articulated in this particular video presentation.

I love R.C. Sproul and the hard work he put into this series and this book and I've often recommended it to people who seek to understand orthodox preterism, but this closing 23 minutes has always bothered me.

  4. Found this type of teaching in seminary utterly useless. Akin to: How many angels can dance on head of a needle? Now let's spend countless hours debating while the world goes to hell around us. UGH.

  5. Man of Lawlessness
    2 Thessalonians 2;
2 Now in regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our [a]gathering together to meet Him, we ask you, [b]brothers and sisters, 2 not to be quickly unsettled or alarmed either by a [so-called prophetic revelation of a] spirit or a message or a letter [alleged to be] from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has [already] come. 3 Let no one in any way deceive or entrap you, for that day will not come unless the [c]apostasy comes first [that is, the great rebellion, the abandonment of the faith by professed Christians], and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction [the Antichrist, the one who is destined to be destroyed],4 who opposes and exalts himself [so proudly and so insolently] above [d]every so-called god or object of worship, so that he [actually enters and] takes his seat in the temple of God, publicly proclaiming that he himself is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you, I was telling you these things? 6 And you know what restrains him now [from being revealed]; it is so that he will be revealed at his own [appointed] time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness [rebellion against divine authority and the coming reign of lawlessness] is already at work; [but it is restrained] only until he who now restrains it is taken out of the way. 8 Then the lawless one [the Antichrist] will be revealed and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by the appearance of His coming. 9 The coming of the [Antichrist, the lawless] one is through the activity of Satan, [attended] with great power [all kinds of counterfeit miracles] and [deceptive] signs and false wonders [all of them lies], 10 and by unlimited seduction to evil and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the love of the truth [of the gospel] so as to be saved [they were spiritually blind, and rejected the truth that would have saved them]. 11 Because of this God will send upon them a misleading influence, [an activity of error and deception] so they will believe the lie, 12 in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe the truth [about their sin, and the need for salvation through Christ], but instead took pleasure in unrighteousness.

  6. On the back of one of his books it says God had already decided before you were born if you are going to Heaven or Hell.
One night I heard a pretty good sermon and then at the very end, he says, "You can't choose Christ, He has to choose you, so if you feel Him calling you…"
So if an alcoholic was about to put down the drink or an addict was going to put down the needle, I'm sure that when he got to that part he probably said "No way God would choose me", and went back to that drink or drug.

  7. Here is the ABSOLUTE PROOF that we are NOT in the millennium at the present time and it didn't start right after Christ's crucifixion:
    — Let us start with Revelation 20:1-3 (ESV)"
"1. Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain.
2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,
    3. and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while."
    — Pay particular attention to the fact that scripture says regarding Satan, "so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended".
█ If the crucifixion of Jesus Christ sealed up Satan in the abyss, as preterits believe, you can confidently know that the Apostle Peter would, while writing under the inspiration of God, not contradict that.
    — These God-breathed scriptures which Peter wrote AFTER the crucifixion of Christ, after Christ's ascension to Heaven, after Pentecost would clearly be after Satan had been bound, if the millennium started at Christ's crucifixion.
    — So, after the Holy Spirit had come, the millennial teaching would have applied. In other words, if you believe the millennium is "allegory" then Peter wrote these words of 1st Peter 5:8-9 to believers in Christ, while he and us were in the millennium. Here is what Peter says to believers in Christ in 1st Peter 5:8-9,
"8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world."
    — The above scripture clearly shows that Peter is saying that Satan is free, moving about, and still deceiving after the time preterits believe Christ's millennial Kingdom has started. Therefore, if we are in the millennium today, or were when Peter wrote that, then Peter is a liar, and the Bible cannot be trusted.
    — Now that you KNOW the Antichrist is a yet to be fulfilled prophecy, please watch the following video which reveals one of the most likely ways the Antichrist will emerge.

  8. If the text of the bible is easy and clear to understand I dont believe we have license to distort it by saying it's a type or analogy. I understand horses colors and interpretation because it cant be literal horses. 1000 years with christ ruling as priests and kings is complete and no need to convert or interpret.

  9. I am not sure the value of learning bad doctrine from people who are decieved and miss the correct interpretation.
Ezekiel 39 is the beggining of the millenium.
Ezekiel 38 is the end of the millenium when jesus rules on earth with a rod of iron.
Hence israel without walls bars or gates.

  10. It appears, if the comment section is anything to go by; either our dear brother is a poor teacher, or many weren’t paying attention to the rest of the series. Oh!!! And if you came to this with an already made up mind, why are you here.

  11. In 1998 I had a surgery and saw an angel who told me many things. He told me that no one knows when it will be but Christ is gathering His people and His angels. He also told me in about 2 years time I would get disturbing news from afar–then 2001 happened. All I can say is come Lord Jesus. Latter I was having dreams where Christ was telling me to, "Hurry! We need you, he is already in the world."

  12. Dr Sproul, good summary of the different viewpoints, but you may have misspoke or made an error with the view of the dispensationalists that is we believe that Satan will be bound for the millennium and after that released for a short time. You said they don't believe in the binding of Satan for a thousand years.

  13. When Christ ascended He is seated on the Throne in Heaven reigning now. Those Christ saves are reigning now. Those saved are given The Holy Spirit to bear witness to the truth who is Christ Jesus. We are waiting the second coming. Jesus tells us that many will come in His name that are false a counterfeit Christ. The mercy seat is open and Christ is saving all those The Father has given Him and none will be lost. The Catholic Church is the false Church out of Rome. There is no rapture and no restoration of the Jewish Temple. Israel is symbolic. Jesus said it is finished. Jesus is saving His sheep and none will be lost.

  14. I believe in something different but that takes truths from partial-preterism and amillenialism.
    – The Great tribulation happened from 66-70AD when Jerusalem was trampled by the gentile zealots who captured Jerusalem until Rome destroyed the city.
    – Matthew 24 was fulfilled in AD70.
    – the antichrist sat in the 2nd Temple of Jerusalem before it was destroyed.
    – The 1st resurrection of the martyrs happened in AD70.
    – The kingdom "came" by being transferred from Old Covenant Israel to the New Covenant Church of both Jew and Gentile.
    – AD70 was the "coming" of the LORD in judgment over Israel, fulfilling the parables of Matthew 21-22.
    – The 1st Century was the Apostolic generation that witnessed the worst suffering in Church history – that will never be repeated again.
    – The Gospel has gone to all nations for 1900+ years post-70AD without as much hindrance as in the 1st Century period.
    – The millenium began in AD70 when Christ crushed the enemy of the persecution by Israel.
    – The millenium is symbolic unknown period of 1000 years – Peter said in 2nd Peter 3 that the 1000 years is like a day, a day like 1000 years – the only other place in the New Testament that talks about the 1000 years – an indefinite period.
    – At the end of this symbolic millenium, satan will deceive the nations to attack Jerusalem (Beloved city) and the Church (camp of God's people).
    – Christ will appear in the heaven in blazing fire and rapture the Church before the world is destroyed by fire.
    – The new heaven and earth will be revealed and there will be no more sin, death or pain. The Church of true believers will live on the renewed earth with God and Christ forever and ever in the resurrection.

  15. A bit confused! If we are already in the millennial period, does this mean Satan is chained up right now? If this is so, why do we see things such as world wars 1 and 2 and so much demonic activity etc? And what about Isaiah chapter 11…where doe this fit in if we are already living in the millennium? This belief raises more questions than answers!

  16. WHAT A JOKE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The law and the prophets [[[WERE until John:]]] since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. All prophecy is fullfilled and,,you do not put new wine in old skins

  17. If there is one God and one Holy Spirit where does all the confusion come from? Satan is the author of confusion. These different views serve no purpose other than to show the world that believing in Jesus is just that a belief. They don't see a difference between the two because we cannot agree amongst ourselves. What I see is that the Holy Spirit reveals the truth. Not all believers are actually listening to the Spirit in prayer rather leaning on their own understandings. These Doctrinal degreed men and women of God have educated themselves to where they are not listening. Jesus said He spoke in parables to the people because they didn't have ears to hear and eyes to see. He then told the disciples that they do and that is why they understand when Jesus speaks. What is this ears and eyes? It's God in them through the Holy Spirit. It's not just a decision to have left everything behind and follow Jesus. There is one truth and if you read the scriptures for yourself through the Spirit of the living God you will understand because you too will have ears to hear and eyes to see. You don't have to have a college degree of any kind.

  18. millennium is not in the bible, either. Nor rapture, trinity, eternal salvation, replacement theology, Jesus is coming soon. All lies. The New Jerusalem, as well as the New Eden, are all in heaven, not earth. Jesus returns to destroy the world, not start a new one.

  19. The Kingdom of God is eternal, that is, it has no beginning and no end because the Kingdom of God is in Christ. The Kingdom of God did not start at the first advent of Christ. It has always existed. We lost the Kingdom of God through the sin and fall of Adam. Christ came to reinstate those who will believe in Him back into the Kingdom of God. We are allowed to see the Kingdom of God again at our born-again experience. We progressively enter the Kingdom of God as we grow in our divine understanding. In the end, we will inherit the Kingdom of God if we overcome our carnality, the devil, and the fallen system.

  20. We know what's going to happen but we don't know when! The teaching in scripture is so subtle that it is very easy to miss important clues. But we do know this, the body of Christ is the elect containing both Jew and Gentile. So there is no division regarding the body. If that is true, then the resurrection must include all those elected that God has chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world who must then bear Christ likeness from the moment of transition and transformation at the last trumpet!

  21. The End Times

    _Based on Daniel 12

After the rule of dark times, the heavenly, man who is always one with Michael in fulfilling God's word, continued his revelation to Daniel. He said that at that time, Michael, the great prince of Israel and protector of her people, will take his stand.

What are the astonishing events that will mark that time?

-a time of great distress that it didn't happen since the birth of nations

_a time of deliverance for the holy people, all whose names are written in the book of God

_a time for many souls who are sleeping in the dust of the earth will wake up and some will go to immortality

_a time for those who lead many to righteousness to shine like the stars of heaven

_a time for the sealed words of the scroll to be opened and many will be restless to increase knowledge

How long is that time for all these things to be fulfilled?

_it will take for a time, times, and half a time; when the given power to the holy people ends, then all these things are finished

What will be the outcome of this set up end times?

_many will be purified, made spotless, and refined; but the wicked will not recognize this time and will continue to be wicked

What transpire next after these set up bright times?

_there will be 1,290 days from the time the daily sacrifice or the daily work of priesthood or mediation is abolished until the setting up again of the abominable one in the holy place; and there will be 1,335 more days of waiting, and those who wait and reach the end of these last days are the blessed and holy

  22. John darby first quoined the word rapture in 1830 from Latin vulgate :rapimur " ,we shall be snatched up." Prior to said date this was never believed as 3 rd coming of christ , only christ will come then game over, heaven or hell.
