R.C. Sproul | – What is the gospel?

Salvation is not a reward for the righteous but a gift for the guilty. From one of our live events, Steven Lawson articulates what Jesus Christ has done to redeem His people from their sin and from the just condemnation of a holy God.

  1. @3:32 He says "_the Reformers – true to scripture – took out the word 'and' and ADDED 'alone'."_
There's a penalty for adding to scripture . . . something about having your name blotted out of the book of life, right?

No one receives saving grace by "faith alone." The apostle James used Abraham's example to show that faith without works is dead. Abraham's "works" was his obedience to God: he acted on his faith and obeyed (nothing to do with "works" of the law, and nothing to do with good "works"). For his obedience he was justified to God, "and not by faith only" (James 2:24).

Does not scripture tell us that Jesus is "the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him" (Heb 5:9)?

So, how do we obey God today? What are we told to do? John the Baptist, and Jesus, and Peter tell us to repent: change our mind about continuing in sin. Here's Paul:
⚫ "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30).

In fact, outside of repentance our sins remain – not blotted out – and we remain outside His mercy and grace. We will perish, without redemption: we will pay our own death penalty:
⚫ "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV).
⚫ "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
⚫ "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish." (Jesus, in Luke 13:5)
Peter makes it clear: come to repentance, or else perish:

⚫ "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9)

In fact, Jesus told His disciples – after His resurrection – to preach "repentance and remission of sins" —not "faith alone":
⚫ "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." (Luke 24:45-47)

But we heard NOTHING about repent or repentance in the video. Heads up, for anyone who's read this far: "faith alone" is a sly, sneaky way of saying "no obedience required, no repentance required." Please do not be deceived!

We receive grace through faith (Eph 2:8), not just because we have faith. Faith shows us the need to "come to God" (Hebrews 11:6) on His terms —in repentance. It is the decision to obey and come to Him in repentance that pleases Him (Heb 11:6), and for which we enter His promised mercy (Prov 28:13), and have our past sins blotted out (Acts 3:19; Rom 3:25; 2 Peter 1:9), and for which we receive the gift of the holy spirit (Acts 2:38 and 5:32) by which we enter "the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19).
