Robert Barron | – Bishop Barron on the Coronavirus, Catastrophe, and Contingency

The coronavirus and other catastrophes are but dramatic examples of a general truth about the nature of things, a truth that we all know in our bones but that we choose, typically, to cover up or overlook.

  1. I have Aquinas high school near me, the arch rivals of McQuaid Jesuit (my school). I wonder if the Coronavirus could be a possible punishment or chastising from God as warned by our Holy Mother at Garabandol? I realize the Catholic church is still on the fence on that one?

  2. Full disclosure, I'm not a Catholic, nor was I brought up in any religion. But I love delving into religion, spirituality, whatever to do with faith. Keats' Negative Capability came from a man of anti-religiousness, but expressed the understanding of not seeking to explain everything, particularly the beauty of the world and beyond. Strangely, this as a young teenager was my awakening, even when angry with organised religion. It made me understand the openness and the true nature of beauty. That it is to feel, not to explain. Eventually, and it took a while, this lead me to my own faith in the oneness. Which is God. I was brought up in Ireland in Catholic schools so I know the prayers and they help me, Jesus helps me. But I can't say what God is, other than the love, the one consciousness that binds us all and it all together… The beauty of positive action and thought that we should all aim for. I respect all religions because I know, fundamentally, they're all aiming for the same thing. Love. We need to fight for this in these veiled and shallow times. I love God and that is my aim, goodness and love. But I'll never force a thing on others, I don't have that authority.

  3. But Bishop, the cause of the corona virus epidemic was it was manufactured the virus lab in Wuhan . This was man made in a lab . This is the cause. I struggled with this.. the California fires are natural …..

  4. being mortal means we are born to die. what we do with our lives here and now, in every moment to rise up! I love that you say that! Thank you, there is a promise so don't fret, whatever happens, happens here. But, the essence of who we are is the spirit and this virus may just prove a means for us all to find our calling, maybe there is time for us to look outside ourselves when we return from this and ask deeper questions knowing it could be all gone in a second. My deep prayers if for more of us to sincerely do more to help those in need, find purpose, and give away what in unnecessary in our lives. (this doesn't just mean items it could be actions).
