Robert Barron | – How Does Vatican II Inform Your Mission? — Bishop Barron on Vatican II

Friends, 26% of people in our country identify as religious “nones,” and 40-50% of former Catholics now claim no religious affiliation. This audience is growing in size and in its skepticism of religion, but tends to be open to the methods of the New Evangelization. It’s in the spirit of these media-driven methods, the evangelistic emphases of Vatican II, and the missionary zeal of St. John Paul II and Cardinal Francis George that Word on Fire finds its missionary center.

  1. It's an uphill task given the state of our culture. But if detractors start asking questions, we know there is hope. Thanks Bp, you were indeed called to change lives. God Bless!

  2. Thank you, Bishop Baron, for another inspiring message. God bless you. I like a blended approach to evangelization. Via doing – Teach a man to fish – reach out your hand to one in need, etc. Also through science, as truth (found anywhere) is compatible with Jesus (THE TRUTH), and the world is "all about science" now so I need to remind folks that there is compatibility between Reason and Faith, always. For example, some formulations of quantum theory allows for "miracles" and so on. Finally, I try to pray and be good, and it can help all, through Jesus. I say study some modern deep thinkers who have bridged the gap but are not known — Study Jimmy Akin and Peter Kreeft and Alvin Plantinga and Tad Paholecheck (sp?).

  3. Bishop Barron, your work has brought me out from the culture and into the church, and it has been the greatest treasure someone could have ever given me. It seems to me that you are engaging the culture in exactly the manner that Vatican II intended. Thanks for all you and your team do!

  4. Your Excellency, with all of this evangelization going on, how do you account for statistics you mention? Also, what about people in their 40s? Are the numbers any better?
I don't mean your work specifically.
Something went wrong somewhere, long before YouTube came on the scene.

  5. The work is having effect. After a long lapse from my baptism, first confession, first communion, and confirmation a gentle reawakening to take steps to find a Catholic church for my soul. Worship is key, receiving the Eucharist is my hope. My story is long. In short religious writtings and many YouTube views brings me to wait on God's mercy and grace. Pray for us who are none.

  6. I think there is still a need to get people in a room to engage big questions away from the church campus. Theology on Tap tends to only engage active Catholics. Alpha, while started by protestants, has Catholic content, but I've only seen it at churches. Maybe debates along the lines of the Catholic Evidence Guild. Virtual Hyde Park?

  7. Your Excellency, I find myself wondering why so much emphasis on Vatican II. I get that we aren't supposed to reject it and that's fair enough. But it has also made me reflect on the rest of the councils. It would be great if you could also give them a serial treatment the way you are doing with Vatican II. We should be informed of all the councils and none should be rejected or cast aside. How do they all fit into the present life of the Church?

  8. Are all of those who identify as a "none" agnostic or atheist? The reason I ask is that I have some Evangelical friends who would say they are not religious because they deny that Christianity is a religion.

  9. I've just been confirmed, on July 11th. I'm one of those 'nones'. I had left my protestant church and had very little faith left. Your videos made me seriously look at Catholicism and also helped me to resolve some of the issues that held me back. I would not be a Catholic today if it were not for your videos.
And now I'm a WOF member and enrolled in the Sacramento Diocese catechist training (on hold for now with the pandemic). I never would have imagined that would be me back in my 'none' days 🙂
Thank you for all you do for us.

  10. I don't believe in coinsidents, I have faith in my heart! The fact I found you & have been listening to you for over a yr now is God(JP II, Carnal & you) works in action. Thank you very much for all the work you do & your team. God bless you all!!!
