The Bible Project | – Royal Priests of Eden

Did you know that Israel’s tabernacle tent was designed as a symbolic garden of Eden? And did you know that Adam and Eve were proto-priests who lived and worked in the sacred space? In this video, we explore God’s plan for humanity to serve as royal priests over all creation and how the story of Jesus brings this priestly drama to its ultimate resolution.

  1. Did you know that Israel’s tabernacle and temple were designed as a symbolic garden of Eden? The designs of both of these sacred spaces (see Exodus 25-31 and 1 Kings 6-8) are full of hyperlinks and imagery that connect back to Eden. The gold (see Genesis 2:11; Exodus 25:3, 11; 1 Kings 6), the specific jewels (Genesis 2:12 and Exodus 25:7; 28:9), the flowering trees (Genesis 2:8-9; Exodus 25:31-35; 1 Kings 6:18, 29), and, of course, the guardian cherubim (Genesis 3:24; Exodus 25:18-22; 1 Kings 6:23-28) all appear only in sacred spaces in the Bible.

There are also three tiers of sacred space in each one of the places. An outer space that surrounds the sacred (the land of Eden in Genesis 2:8, the courtyards in Exodus 27:9-19 and 1 Kings 6:36), then the inner holy space of the sanctuary (the garden of Eden in Genesis 2:8; the holy place of Exodus 26:33-35; the main hall of 1 Kings 6:17), and then the holy of holies where God’s presence took up residence (the tree of life in the garden’s center in Genesis 2:9; the ark of the covenant in the holy of holies in Exodus 25:10-22 and 1 Kings 6:19-22). And last but not least, there is the high priest who alone walks in and out of these sacred Eden-like spaces. The rituals and worship of these priests are called ‘abodah (“worship,” “service”) and mishmeret (“guarding,” “keeping”) in the Torah (see Numbers 3:5-10; 8:19-22).

These are the same words used to describe the activity of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden (see Genesis 2:15). All these parallels make it clear that the biblical authors want us to see that God’s ideal calling for humans is to serve as royal priests who mediate God’s presence in a united Heaven-on-Earth space. This vocation is what humanity sadly forfeits through their rebellion in Genesis 3. And the rest of the biblical story is about God’s plan to restore humanity to their role as royal priests, so that the Heaven-on-Earth blessings of Eden can flow out to the rest of the world. This is the story Jesus saw himself fulfilling and bringing to its climax, and it’s what we’re going to explore in our series on the Royal Priest.

This question, it turns out, isn’t that hard to answer. They viewed the world as a three-tiered house, with “the skies above, the land beneath, and the waters below the land” (Exodus 20:4). And the land is prevented from sinking back down into the waters by means of “pillars” that form a “foundation’ (Psalm 24:1-2, Job 38:4-6). And what are these waters in the first place? This refers to the chaotic waters of the pre-creation state described in Genesis 1:2: “The land was wild and waste, and darkness was over the deep waters.” In other words, the biblical authors envision creation as an act of the divine will, facing the non-reality of darkness and water and carving out realms of stability and order, so that life can safely flourish on the dry land.

If this all sounds a bit strange, there’s a good reason for that. The biblical authors didn’t view the universe the same way you and I do! Their language shows no awareness that we live on a huge globe or that we’re revolving around the sun in a solar system that’s part of a massive galaxy. That’s how we imagine the cosmos, which is great! But the biblical authors saw things differently. If we want to understand what they’re trying to tell us about the purpose of creation and about the character of the Creator, we need to put all our cosmic ideas on hold. When we do so, we open ourselves to see reality from a whole new perspective, and that’s what we aim to do in our new video on Genesis 1.

  2. I can't wait to watch your series. I have served in ministry for quite a number years. This is in my opinion is some of the best presented and easy to understand material I have ever heard. Keep up the great work guys! Blessings to you.

  3. It syncs to your podcast series. Soooo gooood! You hear the topics and see a virtual that actually succincts the whole podcasts. Thank you for helping the believers and the pre-believers to grasp Jesus Christ humanity and divinity all the same

  4. God commanded that no images be made of Him because we are made in His image. Either I heard that wrong or it is wrong altogether, for in Romans we find God's complaint against mankind is that they worship the creature rather than the Creator. How could you make an image of God that would do Him justice. You can't and pointing at Adam and Eve is only going to boost people who preach the little god doctrine. You are false here.

  5. Great video. Except that they have the cherubim facing the wrong way on the ark. But it’s wonderful that the Bible Project is making more videos around our roots in scripture. So many today forget the first 2/3 of the Bible.

  6. Just like the early christians believed, Adam and the virgin Eve brought Sin to the world; the Virgin Mary, The New Eve, brought the New Adam to save the world of sin.

Justin Martyr 155 Dialogue with Trypo:
"He became man by the Virgin, in order that the disobedience which proceeded from the serpent might receive its destruction in the same manner in which it derived its origin. For Eve, who was a virgin and undefiled, having conceived the word of the serpent, brought forth disobedience and death. But the Virgin Mary received faith and joy, when the angel Gabriel announced the good tidings to her that the Spirit of the Lord would come upon her, and the power of the Highest would overshadow her: wherefore also the Holy Thing begotten of her is the Son of God; and she replied, 'Be it unto me according to thy word." And by her has He been born, to whom we have proved so many scriptures refer, and by whom God destroys both the serpent and those angels and men who are like him; but works deliverance from death to those who repent of their wickedness and believe upon Him."

  7. I would like to see something on the council of peace.

Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. Zechariah 6:13

  8. I was so hoping you guys would make a video on the phrase "in God's image", and here it is mentioned in this video. I've got to say though, I still don't understand it!

"God's image, which means they represent God in his holy space," which is the garden in Eden.

What does this mean, that we are analogous in that domain to God is to his domain?

  9. Thanks to the BP for another great video. After viewing the video 1 Peter 2:9 came to mind…… But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

  10. "… ruling the world together on God's behalf." Hmm… true as that statement is, I hope you guys explain that this is for the (spoiler alert) Millennium time and the new earth, new heaven and New Jerusalem time, because a lot of people think this is a "now" thing, and that's not really the case. Now is the time to overcome so that we can go back to ruling with Yeshua as kings and priests later once Babylon the Great is destroyed by the Lord and the overcoming saints, and our reign is established.
