The Bible Project | – The Habit of Open-Mindedness: Process Series

In our latest video from our Process series, we talk about how important it is to set aside our assumptions about the world when reading the Bible and instead work to understand what the biblical authors were actually trying to communicate. When we cultivate a habit of open-mindedness when studying the Scriptures, there is endless discovery over a lifetime of reading available to all of us.

  1. The same has been said by Charles Sanders Peirce over a hundred years ago, not about the Scriptures per se, but about everything that comes into the purview of human inquiry. The problem is, though we can get closer to a truer understanding of something, we will never be completely objective in our inquiry of that something. There is always going to be a little piece of me in anything I study, not because that piece of me is really there, but because I can't escape the human problem of bringing my context and goals to that which I study or "seeing a hammer as a shovel" as Tim Mackie has so poignantly stated. That doesn't mean, "to heck with it, everything is relative," but it should also give us pause to remember that our own research and the research of others still will reflect something of the researcher.

  2. See, how Pride deceive men that are way above their place. Perhaps the son wasn't making a "mistake" and "confusing" a hammer with a shovel… THAT ASSUMPTION is also one that denotes Pride, Dark Pride, dark because it is in "darkness" and cannot be seen by the one "possessed" by Pride. Oy men oh men, lovers of money and comfort, one that looks for comfort WILL NEVER FIND TRUTH, and that's how the Lord keep prideful men away from Truth by keep them really comfortable…

  3. The pope has the keys to discipleship from Jesus that is tge divine given authority ofthe Foman Catholic church. The majesterium is the consultation document for all Christians. Also the church is made up of sinners and saints

  4. Hi Tim! Can we have another series where you pick a topic and just say whatever you want to say for 10-20 mins per topic? What you've been doing is great for most people, it's pure quality content, but it's just the surface. I believe there are others who yearn for a deeper understanding (i.e. they just want to learn more), and creating such high quality videos take too much effort. Thanks for your consideration!

  5. IRON NICKEL IS THE EARTH'S CORE, I FIND THAT IRONICAL… OH!! YOU HAVE $.20?? PAIR-A-DIMES?? PHONETICALLY SPEAKING… Y'ALL REALLY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE THE PHONE!! IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME?? WHAT?? ONE WILL THEN… WHY BOTHER?? NO ONE IS LISS'N-ING!! SEE, NO [T] IN THE END, YOU WILL KNOW THE MEANING AND MYSTERY AND EXIST IN THE MADNESS OF METAPHORS MIRACULOUSLY MANIFEST INTO THE REALITY OF YOUR EXISTENCE WHICH NO ONE ELSE WILL SEE FOR THEY ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION AND THEIR PRIDEFUL VAIN IGNORANCE WILL NOT ALLOW THEM TO SET ONE FOOT THE RIGHT DIRECTION… LET ALONE 2FT.

  6. This short video opens my mind in ways I never thought of, I recalled my layers of belief systems are interacting when I am reading and studying the scriptures, instead of taking the message the author are trying to tell us. Great work Bible project team, hope to see more of this type of video.

  7. Very narrow approach to open-mindedness. 'To be open to what the bible is saying.'
To be open minded also means to include questioning the validity of the Bible and Jesus.
It means to be open to hear the spiritual insights those of other non-christian traditions have to offer.
It means being open to listen to a criticism of christianity given by non-christians, pagans. [Generally the victims of christianity]
It means being open to the validity of other forms of worship including idol worship.
To be open to see and state clearly from exactly where our reservations towards open-mindedness stems.
Because otherwise we only promote the long held belief and accusations of in truth being narrow-minded chauvinist bigots.
We are Open-minded enough to accept/steal practices such as the yoga of Hindus and Narrow/closed-minded enough to then term it 'christian Yoga'.
My own feeling is that claiming open-mindedness and then supporting proselytizing religions with missions is akin to hypocrisy.

  8. it is interesting that this "open mindedness" is the "attitude" or "spirit" that science has, true science though not those who have read the studies of other and taken them as truth without actually having the experience. An open mind is prerequisite for scientist to find truth. Same is for a the Scientist of God.

  9. If gravity exists: then things with mass are pulled towards other things with mass. If things with mass are pulled toward one another: then the universe should be shrinking. If the Universe is shrinking then it is taking up space. If the Universe is taking up space: then by shrinking it is taking up less space. If Universe was once taking up more space: then it is now taking up less space. If the Universe is now taking up less space then there is space which the Universe is no longer taking up. If there is space which the Universe is no longer taking up: then the Universe is not everything. If the Universe is not everything then the Universe did not always exist. However, there is evidence that the Universe is expanding and therefore there is enough force acting upon objects to overpower some masses gravitational pull for as long as that force is acting. If the Universe is expanding: then it takes up space. If the Universe is expanding: then there is space which the Universe is taking up which wasn't always being taken up. If the Universe can take up space which it wasn't always taking up: then there has been a time when the Universe wasn't everything and ergo it isn't necessarily everything now. If the Universe has not been everything in the past: then it has not always existed. If the Universe has not always existed: then it had a beginning. If the Universe had a beginning caused by randomness: then there shouldn't be order. If there is order: then the Universe wasn't born randomly. If the Universe wasn't born randomly: then the Universe was created on purpose. If the Universe was created on purpose: then there is a rational being who created it. If there is a rational being who created it: then this rational being had a reason to create the Universe. If this rational being exists: then this rational being must be omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. If this being is omniscient and rational: then this being would not create anything for any other reason than to have one or more rational companions. If this being desired rational companions: then it would only make any other beings if it knew it could receive rational companions. If this being made beings to become rational companions: then it would give them free will so they could be rational. If this being gave them free will: then they could choose to be irrational some of the time. If they chose to be irrational: then it would probably be because they ignored the logic I've used up until now. If they chose to be irrational: then they would need to be unmade unless they could become rational afterward. If they could become rational: then something would need to be done to show them why it is desirable to be rational. If something were able to show them it is desirable to be rational: then it would have to show them that the creator desires companionship, but only companionship with rational beings. If this action were to be done: then it would have to be done at such a time for the knowledge of the act to not get lost before the largest possible number of potentially-always-rational-beings of any time could be persuaded to desire to be always-rational-beings. It seems that time was during the prime of the Roman Empire. It seems Jesus dying on a cross at that place and time was in fact the best possible way to persuade as many potentially-always-rational-beings to desire to be always-rational-beings so they could spend eternity with their creator and learn to be always-rational-beings so that their creator is not contradicted.

  10. I think that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil didn't actually do anything, but rather it merely provided a mode by which Humans could do something wrong and therefor fear; ergo sin. I believe this allowance was necessary for the fruition of free will. To be irrational is to fear being irrational. So if Adam and Eve suddenly got amnesia and proceeded to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil: nothing would have happened; at least until realization dawned on them. In other words fear God (who is good and rational) rather than evil (which is irrational). The tree of eternal life wouldn't have done anything either had it been eaten. They could and would only live forever if they didn't fear being irrational. It was the realization that they had eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, not the actual eating. They already had eternal life; however the prior realization made it impossible for them to keep it. To be always rational is to always exist, and to be always irrational is to cease existing. To have a combination of the two is to be in purgatory. So Earth is currently purgatory. To die the first death is to seal in your answer to God as to whether you desire the tree of life or the tree of knowledge. If life and therefore goodness then you'll never cease to exist. If knowledge of good and evil and therefore evil then you'll cease to exist. To be always random is to not exist. To be irrational is to be random. To desire to be always irrational and put away all rationalness is to desire to cease to exist. So when God says: "Depart from me; I never knew you.": he is telling the truth. God is always rational and therefore doesn't know irrationalness. So "Depart from me" is a command to be unmade and therefore get what the commanded desired, and "I never knew you" is a declaration that God is always rational and therefore never random.

I am glad to debate anyone who desires to tear my arguments to shreds, and/or gain more understanding and knowledge.

  11. I would love tu volunteer my time in some way tu your channel and or overall efforts tu bring a remembering of The Gospel tu the believers in the world and a revival of Scriptural education tu the like an opposed. 12. FUBUAU! For us, by us, about us! This is a very valuable message by Tim …………. if the Bible is FUBUAU! Because we are prone to change on a whim and are wired for interpretation driven by selfishness. Thankfully, the Bible is FGBGAG! For God, by God and about God. The emphasis of this message by Tim doesn't once challenge us to hear what God is trying to say to us, but rather the emphasis multiple times is placed on the "biblical authors". And the human characters in the bible, they are there for us to use for self-reflection? It is their brokenness that should cause us to reflect, not on ourselves, but on God, concluding "GOD did an amazing thing through a broken person". 2 Corinthians 4:7, "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." The reading of the scriptures should be bathed in prayer, taught by one gifted to do so and read as often as possible in the context of fellowship. This is how you avoid misinterpretation, not reliance on our own "open mindedness". Hebrews 13:8, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever". Amen.
