In the Bible, the word “witness” is used to describe both a person and an action—someone who sees something and then talks about what they’ve seen. Similar to today, this word is used in both legal settings and to describe an experience with God. But what’s most interesting about the word witness is how it illuminates the story of Scripture, especially the role of the people of God. In this video, we explore how this word contributes to the overarching story of the Bible.

  1. The word “witness” makes us think of someone testifying in a courtroom. Or maybe you think of someone sharing their religious testimony or persuading others about their faith. These ideas are similar to what we find in the biblical text, but the word and theme of witness also tell a much bigger story. In the Bible, a witness is someone who sees something amazing or important and then shares it with others (Ruth 4:9). We call this act of sharing “bearing witness,” and it isn’t about being pushy. Witnesses simply share their experience. This idea is simple, but it carries a lot of responsibility (Exodus 20:16; Deuteronomy 19:18-20). God calls a group of people, Israel, to be witnesses of his character and actions to the nations (Exodus 19:4-6; Isaiah 43:10-12). And even though they continually fail at their role, God does not give up this partnership with them. Instead, he appoints chief witnesses to the people—Moses, the prophets, and ultimately Jesus—to open their eyes again to who God is (Romans 3:21; John 1:7). When Jesus' companions witnessed his death and resurrection, their eyes were opened. They were transformed into the witnesses God had always intended, and they went out to bear witness to the nations about what they had seen (Luke 24:44-48; Acts 1:8). Today, when we experience the love and rescue of Jesus, we can join in this simple yet weighty task of representing him to the world by sharing what we have experienced.

  3. Yahweh is not God’s name. It's Jehovah, and God wants us to call him and worship him in our languages. Yahweh isn’t in the bible, and Jehovah translated to Hebrew isn't Yahweh. So, we should call him father. As Jesus did, since we’re followers of Jesus.

  7. Guys, why are we getting upset or biased that the narrator is female? It's about the content and prevailing message of the gospel that endures. Tim and John are awesome and OG, but there is always room to expand the Bible Project family just as God wanted his message / kingdom expanded through his people Israel. Just as he has a love and care for all of us, whether we're personally chosen like Israel OR not, so should we act likewise with new members on the Bible Project. God enjoys diversity (given he created all of us, in our diverse backgrounds) so we should too with our narrators and look forward what they have to offer from their unique perspective. I'm all for this! Ofc Tim and John will still be here, but we all should be open and welcoming Carissa. So welcome! And great job to the whole team and Carissa on this video. =)

With all respect and love I want to bring to your attention that in your companion audio in the Church at home email, you stated that when Israel failed as God’s witness, God came up with a new plan and that was Jesus and his redemptive mission. I believe you misspoke because the Bible clearly teaches that God planned for Jesus to come before the foundation of the world was put in place. Also, God is all knowing so he was not surprised that Israel failed in this respect, so he would not have had to come up with a new plan. In addition, the promise to Abraham about one of his descendants blessing the whole world happened before Israel was a nation. Thanks for your efforts and have a wonderful day. It’s so interesting that the word ‘Martus’ is tied in with the word ‘Martyr.’ It makes perfect sense since Jesus tells us in order to become His disciples ‘we must deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow Him’(Mathew 16:24) and Paul also said ‘he died daily.’1 Corinthians 15:31, It just goes to show that if we truly want to bear witness of Christ we must die to our desires, wants, and ideas or in other words become a martyr, not physically but in thought, works, and speech.
