The Chosen | – Can you identify with Judas and Herod?

What do we have in common with people like
Judas and Herod? It’s easier to identify with Simon, Nicodemus, Matthew, etc, but it’s tough to connect to the villains of the Bible. Or maybe not.

“The Chosen: 40 Days With Jesus, Book Two” is our second devotional book and takes you even deeper than the show into the stories and people of the gospels.

Our writers found themselves asking some serious questions this time around, and you’ll find challenging but fascinating answers.

  1. Judas repented, Matt.,chap 27vs 3,in the Bible. Also,he threw the money back,he said he betrayed innocent blood,he was so sorrowful,he killed himself. Also,he went to his own place, also,in the Bible. There is more to the story, that we will know,in the kingdom, and I will not be surprised,if Judas,is there. Also,Matt,26 vs 50.

  2. Salome was actually a very spoiled, manipulative girl who mostly used her well endowed beauty and cunning to get her way. Far from the impairment of Dysfunctionality. Whereas, Herod was the very embodiment of evil selfishness; unlike Judas who was more rebellious against the occupying authority who felt that revolution against that authority was, in his limited perspective, the way to dispatch that authority. Hence the betrayal, not out of greed for money, but out of his rebellious ideology. Even though Herod not only feared what the mass of John's following might do, if harm came to John, but what may happen to himself, John being a Prophet. However, Herod's selfish want proved stronger than his will to save his own soul.

  3. I Identify with Judas. A Judas was my good friend from AD 1995 to AD 2004…His real name was Carl Anderson and he played Judas in the Broadway play "Jesus Christ Superstar". He was a strong believer in Christ and a God gifted singer who is with Christ in heaven now. Carl once said "God is Love…Easy huh? Music is God in love. Music is the medium between God and Man".

  4. So cool God led y'all to write about Judas and Herod! Totally didn't see that one coming!! God can do amazing things, all things work together for good to them that love the Lord and are called according to His purpose! Romans 8:28. God bless!

  5. Historically, Herod left behind some amazing buildings in Israel. Despite his personality, he carried out some amazing building programs. Those remains are super interesting for an Ancient history teacher, like me. I'm a nerd for those sorts of things.

  6. Since Judas and Herod are both probably in Hell, I do not think I have much in common with them. You can't get to heaven by grace alone. Jesus says this over and over again in the Bible…..If you die with mortal sin on your soul without confession, you will not go to Heaven. Protestants who believe in the heresy from Martin Luther who said that Grace alone is all you need as a Christian, are not following the Bible……….Soooooo because the last thing Judas did was sin by committing suicide, he is probably in hell.

  7. What in the world would anyone have a reason to thumbs down ANYTHING from The Chosen? God bless this ENTIRE team, and special blessings to Dallas. Your faith is beautiful! This has shifted mine to be one with Abba more

  8. I don’t relate to Herod nor Judas. Thank you for presenting this information and allowing me some reflection. It did not take too long to realize that my anger towards Herod and Judas had much more to do with myself! I missed the unwritten point that fortunately for me has since been written in my mind and heart. How? I eventually recalled Jesus teaching Nicodemus that God wants to save the world from sin. I had an overwhelming sense of shame for having judged these Bible characters. I am not God. And tho I see Herod and Judas present their fruits I believe in second chances. I believe that with care and proper nurture, if willing a person has a choice to respond and present fruits of a different kind. For me, Herod and Judas are human and perhaps they never really understood the born again Christian experience. (Jesus taught in parable form out of mercy.) These two men teach me that one is not far from his own deceitful condemnation. But Jesus forgives a truly contrite and sorrowful sinner that meekly approaches to ask for forgiveness. Which is Gods to give.
Please excuse my lack of eloquent written explanation.
Firmly, I do feel that second chances are freely offered. And choices are constant.

  9. Even Villains need Love, I worry about souls, that is where grieving comes in, did they go to heaven when they passed ?Will they ,God forbid if they land in Hell, especially Lost loved ones, this breaks my heart ,I'll grieve forever over this , I believe the Chosen will save many souls from Hell . Thank you Chosen .Pray for the Black sheep out there, Miracles happen every day .

  10. Thanks for sharing this.
I think understanding where they're coming from and why they were choosing to do what they ended up doing is important for our understanding and awareness. I also think this will be a good guide for people to recognize the types of tendencies and choices these "villains" made, so we can choose to resist Satan's temptations and justifications.

Another thing this helps people learn is that in life, there's opposition in all things. Good vs Evil, Right intentions, Wrong intentions. Following Satan's plans or choosing to Follow Jesus Christ's Plan. We each have been given Agency (the power to act for ourselves and not be acted upon).
As such, we can learn these different choices and better understand and know how to go about, truly Following Jesus Christ.
