The Bible Project | – The Gospel

The New Testament contains four ancient biographies of Jesus of Nazareth, and altogether they are called “the Gospel.” Each one tells the story as an announcement of good news that the crucified and risen Jesus is the true ruler of the nations. In this video, we explore why these accounts were written and how you can read them with greater insight.

  1. In the New Testament there are four biographies of Jesus of Nazareth about his announcement of God’s Kingdom, his crucifixion, and his resurrection from the dead. Altogether they are called “the Gospel,” that is, the good news. But why are there four, and why do they differ in various details? The four New Testament Gospel accounts all come from the first generation of Jesus’ closest followers, preserving the testimony of his disciples. But each account was designed to emphasize different themes and claims about Jesus, so that the reader of all four narratives walks away with a much richer picture. In Luke 1:1-4 and John 20:30-31, the authors tell us they selected only some of the narratives and teachings of Jesus that were available among their sources. They also say that the stories have been arranged to persuade the reader that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel and the risen Lord of all nations. In other words, the Gospel accounts are not simply an ancient version of security camera footage! The authors want us to accept their testimony about Jesus as truthful, but their purpose is not only to give us information about the past. They deeply believe that Jesus is alive, that he fulfilled the ancient story told in the Hebrew Scriptures, and that following him will change your life forever! The four Gospels are persuasive texts that invite you the reader to consider your own relationship to this Jesus. 3. Look at the book – The Four gospels at a Glance – You will be amazed. Simple, understandable, with a good overview. The synoptic problem has been eliminated. The author has managed to bring all four Gospels together in parallel. The books are accepted at many universities.

  4. There seems to be some lacking language of the atonement here. Namely, that Jesus at the cross bore the Fathers wrath. He bore the price for our crimes. He was the sacrifice in our place. Our sinful record was imputed to him and his righteousness was imputed to us.

  5. I’m still confused why they don’t ever mention the core of the gospel, God’s wrath being fully poured out on His Son in our place so we don’t have to experience it . They mentioned the forgiveness of sins and Jesus taking the just consequence, but ever so briefly, and not deeply. It just seemed like the perfect place to go to the heart of the gospel and really expand on it, in a video that is about the gospel.

  6. The first minute and a half of this makes me think God is a failure. Surely He knew the rebellion of man before He created Him, so there's no real thing about God 'not giving up.' It makes it sound like he tried and failed, and then tried again. That's my opinion anyway.

  7. Thank you Brethren, Thank you Bible Project for producing and sharing videos…All the Glories, Honors, Powers, Praises and Worships to Almighty GOD (God the Father, Lord Jesus Christ the son and the Holy Spirit) . 8. ETERNAL GLORY TO THE ONLY HEAVENLY FATHER YAHUAH AND HIS SON YAHUSHA! THE RIGHT NAME OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS YAHUAH, AND THE NAME OF HIS SON OF OUR SAVIOR IS YAHUSHA! LORD, GOD ETC … THESE ARE ONLY PAGAN TITLES REPLACED BY REAL HEBREW NAMES!

  9. The Gospel:
    1. God, who is infinite and holy and purely good, decided to create man, the earth, and all of creation. He made man to worship Him, and to be His rulers on earth, second only to Himself. He held nothing back from them except His throne. He also only gave one commandment, which demonstrated man's subjection to God.
    2. Man rebelled against God after being tempted and decided that they wanted to be like God. This caused man and all creation to fall into a sinful, fallen and depraved state. This state is an offense to God. Man is now wretched and depraved to his core and loves sin and sins continually (this is little sins like lying, stealing, lusting, coveting etc but also the sin nature of man) Although man belittles sin, to a Holy and Prrfect God this is an offense worthy if infinite hell fire. Man can not save or redeem himself once his broken these laws written on his heart, and doesn't live up to perfection God's wrath is on him. This is tbe bad news that makes the good news (the Gospel) so incredible. So what does God do so guilty people who deserve hell could be saved and redeemed?
    3. Christ enters the picture. Christ is God incarnate entering into creation to live the life man was supposed to live but powerless to and He (Christ) lived it perfectly. He then laid down His life by suffering and dying on the cross. On that cross He took ALL OF GOD'S WRATH on Himself, that man deserved, so that man could be saved. He essentially paid their "fine" with His life. Then three days later proving He had power over sin, death and the grave He rose bodily and is now reigning in heaven.
    4. Now man is asked to respond by understanding you are spiritually bankrupt and have nothing but filth to offer a Holy God and merit His wrath. You are asked to forsake your sin and repent, then trust in Jesus. Trust in His finished work on the cross. Jesus did, now you believe it so that when you make your maker you say, Lord do not look at my works, buy look at Jesus whom I pit all my trust in for I an wretched and wicked. And God promises to give you a new heart by making you a new creature. You'll still sin this side of heaven, but you'll be conformed into His image and have God's peace and love on you instead of His well deserved wrath.

That's the Good news the Gospels preach about. Jesus announcing Himself and telling people to repent because this life isn't what matters, it's the next. To trust in Him as the way the truth and the life. Where does your heart reveal you will go? If we are honest we know man's heart is wicked and deceitful and we all desperately need a new one to be reunited with our maker. The decision is your to approach God with repentance or pride. Ask for forgiveness or try to prove why you deserve His redemption (which no one does, we are saved by God's grace, mercy and love because He is good, despite our wickedness).

  10. I think you made one small error. The gospel of Mark presented Jesus as the royal servant while the gospel of Luke presented him as the new start for humanity and not the other way around.

  11. the son of man, the messiah, or the kingdom of god isn’t portrayed in the ot as god himself, just a man who saves them who is descendant of david. so that’s not a requirement but jesus was both son of god and messiah(according to christians)

  12. The Gospels are no more proof that the stories of Jesus are true than the Harry Potter books are proof that the stories of Harry Potter are true. No unbiased historian considers the gospels to be objective historical documents, they consider them to be written with an agenda to convert masses.
