Jon Jorgenson | – Is Cussing a Sin?

Can a Christian use swear words? Is cussing a sin? What does the Bible say about swearing? Scripture certainly has a lot to say about the power of language, and that power goes far beyond 4 letter words. In this video, Jon discusses the power that language has to build and destroy, while answering yet another question on Christian behavior.

  1. I would say that swearing jovially and non oppressively with friends who are alright with it is not a sin. Swearing at people to bring them down or make them feel bad, or swearing around people that you know don’t like it, is a sin. So, don’t beat yourself up if you drop a glass of water, and then say something like, “Shit!”. But you shouldn’t be proud of telling a friend with anxiety to, “Stop being such a fucking baby!”.

  2. I listen to some metal, rock, and a bit of alternative music that has some cuss words in it, is it okay if I sing along to the whole songs, even the swear words?

  3. I'm OK with cursing but it depends on the context and the stuff you said…
But I don't use God's name in vain and I do my absolute best not to say Goddamit, I would just say d*mn or dangit or something like that….

  4. Depends on the context and how you use them. Also depends on how you're raised. I was raised in a "non-swearing" household, but felt free when I finally said some for-letter words out of expression of frustration. Beats punching a hole in a wall or holding in your anger. Just one loud F-bomb made me feel better.

  5. I recently joined a company where I'm supposed to transcribe (caption) every word that comes out of the caller's mouth (through voice-typing) including all sorts of words.. It's my job to caption each word as it is ( staying verbatim).
Is it bad if i caption cuss words as they are, if i don't mean them?

  7. Romans 3:23
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
    Isaiah 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
    Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
    Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
    John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    Romans 10:9-10.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    John 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
    1John 5: 10-13
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    1 Corinthians 15:3-4
    For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

  8. Well I searched for this answer because some people I know who are way further than me in their walk with jesus use to joke and sing songs with curse words as an inside joke. As my journey continued with jesus a lot happened and I grew stronger in spirit. And the are songs that I liked with curse words. And I'd sing along but now it greaves the holy spirit to even hear a bad word let alone say it and this is as close as I probably am to him since I'm dieing dayly to self and his helping me take down the enemies strong holds in my life so, my advice is stay close to jesus and be lead by the spirit. As your bond gets closer you'll start to be really sensitive to his ways. I love those songs and wanna listern to them but if my spirit is grieved then I have two choises. Doo what I want and glorify the flesh or upstain and glorify God.

  9. For me personally, I see cussing and excessive foul language as uneducated and low speech. If I'm gonna cuss because I feel frustrated, I'll find a creative way to express that and possibly include a common f word or s word. Its all about how you use these words. That being said, as a christian, one should strive away from profusely using curse words because christians are supposed to be a source of love and patience, just as Jesus was. So all in all, cuss less and be more expressive with your words!

  10. Gosh I want to swear so bad but are we allowed to swear unless we are not talking bad about someone? And I am still confused if these two four letter words are swearing, some people say its not really. Please help me out someone?

  11. Ok but what if you’re joking with friends? I definitely cuss all the time and it sorta helps me release stress when I yell it out. Me and my friends always mess around and say “f you” and “oh my gosh die” and stuff similar to that and we never really mean it. If anything, it makes us more comfortable and it’s funnier.. meaning we’re happy. I’m not sure if this makes sense but I really hope someone could reply and give me a further explanation of whether it’s okay or not.

  12. You can say Jesus in the same context as four letter words…. there is therefore no condemnation to those in Christ…. you have to know what God wants from you…. pork is something we’re not to eat but some do…. one must work out his own soul salvation
