Robert Barron | – What Does Vatican II Say About the Mass? — Bishop Barron on Vatican II

Friends, the Mass is our joining together with Christ’s selfless sacrifice, the eternal act of praise. Because of the all-encompassing nature of worship, there is a tight link between liturgy and the transformation of the world. Therefore, highlighting the Mass isn’t an exercise in irrelevant fussiness; it is rather an emphasizing of the public witness of the Church. Watch the video for more.

About The Author

Bishop Robert Barron These are brief and insightful commentaries on faith and culture by Catholic theologian and author Bishop Robert Barron. The videos complement his weekly sermons posted and podcasted at WordOnFire.org.

  1. Kurt Stasiak O.S.B says in his book Sacramental Theology that the word Liturgy originally meant "the work of the people", hence, the body of Christ, the church, is the people of God working for the salvation of others. The Liturgy is continuous because the sacraments are not parentheticals in our lives by which we call time out, do something sacred, and then return to the "real world".

  2. In the Catholic liturgy of the Mass, the priest says "Lord accept this sacrifice" as he replays the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In the Episcopal church, for example, the priest says," Lord, accept this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving." It concerns me that the Catholic church has made the Mass a new sacrifice at each Eucharist. Didn't the Lord say "Whenever you do this, do this in remembrance (anamnesis) of me." ?
So really He said, whenever you break bread ( eat, have a meal ), remember my sacrifice, don't redo it.
Can you please explain why the Catholic church does this? Isn't it playing with fire to literally recreate His sacrifice? Isn't it somewhat presumptuous to call Him down and resacrifice him in the hands of a priest?
I'm really curious. This is NOT meant as an attack, but a serious question. Thank you Father.

  3. The problem I see with talking about "right praise" is that would seem to provide an opening for Traditionalists who would say the so called, "Novus Ordo" Mass is not right praise.
It just seems to open a whole can of worms.
This seems like an excerpt of a longer video, so maybe the context was lost…

  4. Catechism. 1324 The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life". But yes, we get it, without the liturgy there is no Eucharist so it's okay to say that the liturgy is the source aand summit, as we cannot have the one without the other. But, the exact quote is actually from the Catechism as stated above. Just saying. Regardless this bishop is a blessing for us all. Jesus is Lord.

  5. Never grew up with traditional Latin mass. Grew up Novus Ordo and served for 10 years. Left the church because I didn’t have strong faith in the novus ordo. Came back after finding out about the TLM, and now have a strong prayer life and faith.

  6. My dear Bishop Barron I'm LORNA VAUGHAN a retired School Teacher, I came to know you only when the lock down started. One day through You Tube I stumbled upon Word on Fire mass and I began to watch your mass every day and suddenly you stopped mass from June 1st 2020 and I felt very sad. Because the church i go to is not open yet . But now i watch all your videos, and I love your Sunday sermons very much. So thank you for the good work you are doing. GOD bless you. And I pray for you every day when i' say the rosary. GOD bless you.

  7. I'm reading through "The Spirit of The Liturgy" by former Pope Benedit & Romano Guardini. If You are interested in this subject, and in being transformed by understanding in a much deeper way the mass, and what is contained therein spiritually, then I highly recommend this book!! I'm sure Bishop Barren would agree that it is transforming!

  8. If you're mad in the comments section about traditionalists attacking Bishop Barron, to start assuming motives, calling them idolaters, calling them schismatics, etc., isn't the way to respond. Didn't the Bishop JUST make a video about the toxic culture of calumny on the internet?

If you're truly concerned about their souls the best thing you can do is to pray for them while assuming they are praying for you as well.

  9. Sorry Bishop, but you lost me with this one. I'm no fan of the Latin Mass myself, but by any metric Vatican II has been an unmitigated disaster. True, there's nothing "bad" or "wrong" in the V-II documents themselves. But the changes wrought by the liberal reformers in the "Spirit of Vatican II" pretty much destroyed what had been a vibrant Church.

Thousands of clergy and millions of laity left the church. Few bother to attend Mass anymore. Few even believe anything Catholic any more, since religion classes became nothing more than Social Justice virtue-signaling sessions.

And the Art and Architecture of post-Vatican II churches looks like it was designed by Satan himself! Modest churches look like gyms; high-dollar churches look like Hollywood Sci-Fi movie sets. There's no sense of the Sacred to be found anywhere in them.

We're not yet as pathetic as the Episcopalians, but we're close.

  10. Honorable Bishop Barron,
A new movie based on the book “the Secret”, and it’s horrible ideologies is set to hit several different online streaming services, and enter millions of homes on July 31.
I feel his film comes at a time when the world is searching for hope, and will likely surrender in all the wrong places.
I’m reaching out because I believe if anyone can speak to the gravity of this situation, it is you.

  11. The Mass of St. Paul VI, what the worldwide faithful celebrate today, is also a culmination of retrieving Church history and culture which we've largely lost. Especially from the Patristic and early Middle Ages:

The language of the Mass changed when people no longer spoke Greek as much, it wasn't always Latin, early bishops often used spontaneous prayers, regional variety of the Eucharist was common, and laity had a more active role in a more communal worship.

That does not mean there is less beauty or genius in the Tridentine mass, but it does call us to reexamine how we approach our liturgy. We must always draw from the whole tradition of the Church. Does Novus Ordo need greater reform and reverence? Yes it does! And it should whenever the Church sees the need. But revitalizing worship is not isolated to reverting to one old tradition out of many.

  12. Hi Bishop Barron,

The Novus Ordo is precisely that: a New Mass. And so, as a serious question: How can the “New Mass” be considered as part of Sacred Tradition and part of the 2000 year perennial Deposit of Faith when it was in actuality created in the late 60s by some liturgical committee After Vatican II?

    God Bless Bishop.

  13. But the interior life of the Church is more important than the exterior… its what I learned in a book called: "The soul of the Apostolate". The interior life of the Trinity its what produce the powerful act of creation, the interior life of the Virgen its what God used to operate the Incarnation, the interior life gained at the liturgy and prayer its what missionaries used for centuries to evangelize. The liturgy its no evangelization, that is said in vatican II, it must be preceeded by conversion and evangelization, so its for the growth of the believers not for the non believers. If the Church doesnt feed the believers in their interior life, how are they going to evangelize to the exterior?
