  1. Romans 7:21.. the entire hinge on which the new Way is possible.. "I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good."

Paul just laid out an incredible diagnosis of fallen man in Romans 1:1 through Romans 7:20..a frustrating deadly experience of self determination which started in the garden when the imperfect knowledge of good and evil was accessed in disobedience..

Man was never built to carry this weight..only Creator God can see all things everywhere perfectly..man judges from a limited outward proximity..the Law was given to showcase mankind's inability to govern good and evil.. when man sets out on his own power to do good (even when written down) his misjudgment of circumstance is inherently evil..

Many have set it in their hearts to do good and instantly corrupts it's purpose..the world is full of well intentioned individuals who act on "their" impulse only to wreak havoc in Spiritual terms..

The Holy Spirit only knows the heart of God and can direct a broken and contrite heart towards good deeds.. the moment you set out to do good without Him you become a religious zealot, worthless to the King and His purpose..evil is present the one who WILLS to do good..

Jesus was our supreme example here too..many times he walked by the man who sat at the temple gate begging.
JESUS could have healed him and rightfully so but only did what His Father directed Him to each and every second of each and every day.. Father waited till Peter and John were ready for ministry and healed this man..

The Scriptures (Gospels)are filled with these examples if you have eyes to follow and not lead the Holy Spirit.

  2. Jesus died for our sins and was resurrected the third day: “And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men . . . . For behold, he surely must die that salvation may come; yea, it behooveth him and becometh expedient that he dieth to bring to pass the resurrection of the dead that thereby men may be brought into the presence of the Lord.

“Yea, behold, this death bringeth to pass the resurrection and redeemeth all mankind from the first death—that spiritual death; for all mankind, by the fall of Adam being cut off from the presence of the Lord, are considered as dead, both as to things temporal and to things spiritual.

“But behold, the resurrection of Christ redeemeth mankind, yea, even all mankind, and bringeth them back into the presence of the Lord.

“Yea, and it bringeth to pass the condition of repentance that whosoever repenteth the same is not hewn down and cast into the fire; but whosoever repenteth not is hewn down and cast into the fire; and there cometh upon them again a spiritual death, yea, a second death, for they are cut off again as to things pertaining to righteousness.”

“Therefore repent ye, repent ye, lest by knowing these things and not doing them ye shall suffer yourselves to come under condemnation and ye are brought down unto this second death.”

“And because of the redemption of man, which came by Jesus Christ, they are brought back into the presence of the Lord; yea, this is wherein all men are redeemed, because the death of Christ bringeth to pass the resurrection, which bringeth to pass a redemption from an endless sleep, from which sleep all men shall be awakened by the power of God when the trump shall sound; and they shall come forth, both small and great, and all shall stand before his bar, being redeemed and loosed from this eternal band of death, which death is a temporal death.”

“He denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.”

“And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.

“But there is a resurrection, therefore, the grave hath no victory and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ.

“He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless that there can be no more death.”

“And because of the way of deliverance of our God, the Holy One of Israel, this death, of which I have spoken, which is the temporal, shall deliver up its dead; which death is the grave.

“And this death of which I have spoken, which is the spiritual death, shall deliver up its dead; which spiritual death is hell; wherefore, death and hell must deliver up their dead, and hell must deliver up its captive spirits, and the grave must deliver up its captive bodies, and the bodies and the spirits of men will be restored one to the other; and it is by the power of the resurrection of the Holy One of Israel.

“O how great the plan of our God! For on the other hand, the paradise of God must deliver up the spirits of the righteous, and the grave deliver up the body of the righteous; and the spirit and the body is restored to itself again, and all men become incorruptible, and immortal, and they are living souls having a perfect knowledge, like unto us in the flesh save it be that our knowledge shall be perfect.

“Wherefore, we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness, and our nakedness; and the righteous shall have a perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness, being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of righteousness.

“And it shall come to pass that when all men shall have passed from this first death unto life, insomuch as they have become immortal, they must appear before the judgment-seat of the Holy One of Israel; and then cometh the judgment, and then must they be judged according to the holy judgment of God.”

The last words of Moroni in the Book of Mormon are: “And now I bid unto all, farewell. I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again reunite and I am brought forth triumphant through the air to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead.”

All these verses and more are in the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon truly is a testimony of Jesus Christ and has been brought forth by the power of God in these latter days. Anyone who believes these words from the Book of Mormon (and I know these words are true) should contact the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to speak with the missionaries and find out for themselves that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored in these latter days.

  3. So if a man doesn’t have self control when he gets mad etc… and breaks things curses me out and than asks me to forgive him and begs me not to leave him and to accept hum just the way he is. Is this man really saved?? Should I stay marry to someone like this? I live a hell at home and I’m very close to walk away.

  4. These verses are related to the point you are making.
    Colossians 2:21-23 ESV
[21] "Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch" [22] (referring to things that all perish as they are used)-according to human precepts and teachings? [23] These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
We learn self control by God chastising us.
    Hebrews 12:6-11 KJVS
[6] For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. [7] If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? [8] But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. [9] Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us , and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? [10] For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. [11] Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
But along with being chastised is the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Ghost that changes our heart towards God and men.
    Mark 7:21-23 KJVS
[21] For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, [22] Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: [23] All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

  5. It's actually very, very simple to understand. As a Christian, we are empowered by the Spirit to exercise self-control, but we are NOT forced to. WE alone decide if we will yield to the Spirit, or not. If we (by faith) yield to the Spirit we will reap life, if we (thru unbelief) yield to the flesh we will reap corruption, the choice is 100% ours as Christians to make, that is why it is both a fruit AND a virtue.

  6. Amen~ without the secret place in which we are b4 His throne, pouring ourselves out to Him, He pours Himself into us! ❤ The ONLY way to become an "overcomer". Oh I love the truth and those who preach it! God bless John Piper, Paul Washer and yes, Mark Driscoll. We have all failed God in our work for Him. Mark did what's right and stepped down for a season until God restored him to his work and giftings again. God used Mark to help me understand how precious I am to Him (God). And what I was to accept in my marriage, and what I wasn't, during a time when most pastors were telling wives to be a door Mat for their spouse no matter how you are treated by them. Their is a time and a season for everything. One thing you can count on for sure~ Gods word us TRUTH and it proves itself over and over.

  7. I believe that self control is in part dependent on the believer's willingness to submit to the Holy Spirit (Walk in the Spirit); otherwise it would not be called self control at all. As we submit our will to God's will, He empowers us by His Spirit to do what would be otherwise difficult or impossible based on our own ability. You can see this principle in James 4:7.

  8. These are the things that truly inspire me to be a better person. I know that the one molding me into a masterpiece will perfect me even if it means he burns out the impurities in me like a sword being forged in a flame. I just need to allow him to make me better and be willing to go through this pain.

  9. Holy spirit doesn't create self-control because the world produces it?! ( so you don't need Holy Spirit , you have the world)
    Are you serious?!
Are you living for the world or for Jesus?
*Be careful: when you give your life willingly to Jesus , Holy spirit teaches you to walk every single day with Him ( it's the kindest, small voice within you) but you will have always the free choice. Don't listen to those that have a name in this world that convict you the self-centered…we cannot do anything apart from Jesus!
John 15:5  I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Mathew 24:24 False messiahs and false prophets will arise, and they will perform signs and wonders so great as to deceive, if that were possible, even the elect.
Surrender everything to Him and He will take care of everything…otherwise you'll end up in a pit. Be careful . Test people if they are telling the Truth by praying to Jesus. He hears you and will always tell you the Truth. Believe in Jesus!*❤
    God bless you!

P.S : You don't need to shout and to paraphrase the Truth dr.charles stanley, if you are telling the Truth…
    Isaiah 42
1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.
2 He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets.

  10. We fail to look at the message of the Bible wholesomely.

God's charge against mankind is that he rebels, meaning that man can but chooses not to obey God hence guilty as charged.

"He came to his own but they did not acknowledge or receive him."

"Put to death the passions at work in you"

"Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

"When the gentiles who do not have the law do those things required by the law it shows that the requirements of the law are written in their hearts."

Israel had the law but refused to obey it. Surely we cannot say that God gave them laws that they couldn't obey.

So, I think Piper is stretching the text to fit into a calvinistic perspective.

How is stoicism different from the self control encouraged in scripture? He says that word is the same then says we cannot "hire God" for just the ordinary*(emphasis added) self control.

He is clearly speculating and going beyond what is written or what is the logical conclusion of the text(s).

According to Piper the self control of the Spirit "must" be different. There is no way God can work in us just ordinary self control-he is speculating.

The implication here is that God is charging mankind for a sin which he did not equip them with the ability to resist. This is accusing God of Sin.

This is a calvinistic doctrine which violates scripture.

  11. A LESSON IN CHRISTIAN MYTHOLOGY

The Bible is a collection of contradictory myths and folk tales, mixed in with a little history, originally written in obscure and now dead languages, translated differently over a hundred different times just in English, and reinterpreted, modified, and amended on numerous occasions over a period spanning at least 3,000 years. Due to its hopeless ambiguity, it is and has been subject to endless debate regarding its interpretations. (Unfortunately, your god never speaks or does anything to clarify the ambiguity which is a problem all gods suffer from.) As a consequence, there has been an endless parade of interpretations of the Bible with the more than one hundred different translations producing over 40,000 different Christian denominations, each with their own unique interpretation of the Bible. This is obviously the work of ignorant, uneducated, and superstitious men and hardly the work of an all-knowing, all-powerful, god. The god of Christianity is no different than all the other gods we now regard as mythology. It really is that simple.

  12. Yes… It does… Its a command from The Lord–>Genesis 4:7 KJV — If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

  13. Abba Father, in agreement with this message in accordance with and binding the promises of proverbs 25:28, galatians 5:23 I ask for the spirit of self-control to come into my life and the lives of my enemies, loosening every lack of self-control upon no return of lack of self-control in my life, in the name and by the blood of Jesus Christ, amen and hallelujah!

  14. This guy seems like a snake. This lie of total depravity is there to make you dependant on the church, so that you believe yourself helpless without their guidance. Man must come to God of his own free will, and has done for centuries, without any influence other than his god given conscience. The calvinist viewpoint almost excuses man of their sins, and is likely to cause more people to sin, by pushing the lie that it is inherent in their nature.
